Intel Optane requirements finally revealed

Intel has launched a new microsite dedicated to its 3D XPoint-based Optane memory technology. In addition to highlighting some of the key advantages of the technology, the microsite also reveals the key requirements for using it on a PC.

An Intel Optane memory ready system will need to have the following:

7th Gen Intel Core processor

Intel 200 Series chipset

M.2 type 2280-S1-B-M or 2242-S1-B-M connector on a PCH Remapped PCIe Controller and Lanes in a x2 or x4 configuration with B-M keys that meet NVMe Spec 1.1

System BIOS that supports the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (Intel RST) 15.5 driver.


As confirmed by Intel already, only the Intel Kaby Lake processor family will support Optane. If you’re running a Skylake or older processor in your system, you will not be able to use Intel Optane memory. Support is limited to the following:
