IDF Taiwan Spring 2004 Report

Intel Developer Forum Spring 2004 kicks off at Taipei with the theme “Converging Technologies, Growing Opportunities”. There are some interesting technologies revealed and demonstrated during the two days kenotes. Also we covered interesting sessions such as Enthusiasts PC 2004 on Performance Optmization Techniques.

Intel Developer Forum Spring kicks off today at Taiwan with the
theme "Converging Technologies, Growing Opportunities". In the opening keynote
on Day 1, Intel Vice President and co-General Manager of Intel’s Desktop
Products Group, Louis Burns has discussed about Intel’s strategy relates to
convergence of computing and communications, silicon integration, software
innovation and solutions development.

Louis Burns has demonstrated one of the most interesting
technology which is the Vanderpool Technology (VT) which has the ability to
partition the processor to create virtual machines. The demo showed the
capability of the VT to run a Windows XP (left) and at the same time running
another OS, the Windows 98 (right) which has the ability to run older software
that are incompatible with Win XP. VT can allow the system to run Windows XP and
Linux too at the same time. It will take another 2 and half years for VT to be
implemented in full scale. Intel will explore the possibility of a 64-bit
Windows XP and a 32-bit Windows XP to be run at the same time when the EM64T
ready desktop processor comes along. Other future desktop technologies include
LT, Dual Core, Remote Diagnostics, Asset Management and Media.

Intel is pushing hard on the Digital Home concept and the
entertainment PC is the key platform to set the pace. Entertainment PC is based
on the Grantsdale G chipset together with the LGA775 Prescott and DDR2 memory
technology. Intel has kept the noise level down by implementing passive cooling
and smart fan technology.

Next Louis Burns has demonstrated the RAID capability of the
Grantsdale chipset that emphasize the importance of data integrity in today’s
usage model. With RAID 1 array and hotswap capability, you will be able to
replace the damaged drive with a working one and the RAID software will have the
ability to rebuild the data while the video is still running.

Sean Maloney, the Executive Vice President & General Manager of
Intel Communications Group unveiled the Intel PXA270 processor previously known
as Bulverde. his new XScale processor has Wireless SpeedStep technology for
intelligent power management and also Wireless Trusted Platform for secure
network services, storage of private information and support for security
protocols. Sean Maloney also demonstrated the power of the 2700G multimedia
accelerator that has the ability to provide DVD quality video playback on high
resolution displays, Optimized 2D/3D graphics at 1M triangles/s and Dual
