Huawei to sell Blaze smartphone under own brand in UK

Huawei is known for making mid-range and entry-level smartphones for carriers to rebrand, but it seems that the Chinese smartphone OEM's ambitions for its products has gone beyond that of merely supplying phones to its partners. Apparently, word has it that Huawei plans to release a new budget Android smartphone under its own brand in the UK soon, where it will be called the Huawei Blaze. More details coming right up.

If you are looking for a budget, entry-level Android smartphone to pamper yourself with in the next few months, don't be surprised to see a Huawei-branded smartphone popping up on retail shelves on the day you decided to go shopping for one. This is because the Chinese smartphone manufacturer has announced that it plans to start selling its mobile phones under its own brand in the UK, and the upcoming Huawei Blaze, which is slated to hit retail some time in September, will reportedly be the company's first such own-brand smartphone to be sold in Europe.

Details about the Huawei Blaze smartphone are scarce, but according to a report published by CNET UK, the smartphone, which will be aimed at budget-conscious consumers, will most likely sport a £100 pricetag. This makes sense, considering how Huawei is usually known for producing low-cost, entry-level smartphones, such as its Ideos line of handsets which were released some time last year. In addition, CNET UK has also claimed that the Huawei Blaze will be preloaded with version 2.3 of the Android operating system (aka Gingerbread) and will sport a 3.2inch display, although no information about the screen's resolution or hardware specifications such as processor speed, memory and flash storage capacity were published.

And from the looks of it, it seems that Huawei is going to have its work cut out for them, especially if one takes into account how the market for Android-powered smartphones is already as saturated as it can get. For one, Huawei will have to deal with big-name players such as Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson and Motorola (which itself was acquired by Google less than 24 hours ago). If that was not enough, the fact that other familiar Chinese OEMs such as ZTE and Meizu are also keen to enter the fray in Europe with their own lineup of low-cost, entry-level smartphones means that the the odds are stacked very heavily against Huawei in its attempt to break into the European markets under its own banner. As Huawei's UK executive vice president, Mark Mitchinson, aptly puts it, the company is essentially competing with “anyone involved in Android”.
