As most of our readers will be aware, Huawei announced the Mate 9 Porsche Design alongside the Mate 9 at its media event in Munich, Germany yesterday. While the limited edition handset looks gorgeous, it does come at a hefty price. However, a Huawei rep has revealed that the company plans to launch a much more affordable 5.5” Mate 9 for the masses soon, which will retain the curved display and the basic design of the Porsche Design model.
However, since the new model is expected to be priced lower, we’re afraid Huawei might decide to downgrade some of the key specs in order to keep costs low. The Mate 9 Porsche Design comes with 6GB of RAM and 256GB of built-in storage, an upgrade over the regular Mate 9. With a much lower price tag, it seems very likely that the new 5.5” Mate 9 could come with the same 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage as the standard Mate 9. We wouldn’t be very surprised if the display resolution sees a downgrade as well, from 1440p on the Mate 9 Porsche Design to 1080p Full HD. Rest of the specs are probably going to be identical to the Mate 9.
Last year, the smaller sibling of the Mate 8 was launched as the Mate S. So it could be possible that the upcoming 5.5” Mate 9 model could be launched as the Mate S2.
