HTC will be launching a Snapdragon 835-powered flagship later this year

In an interview given to Tbreak, Chialin Chang, president of HTC’s smartphone business, revealed that HTC will be launching another flagship smartphone later this year, powered by the Snapdragon 835 chipset.

Earlier this month, HTC announced its latest flagship device, the U Ultra. While the device is no doubt very impressive, many of us weren’t too happy with the choice of SoC. The Snapdragon 821 is now an “outdated” chipset, as the Snapdragon 835 is now Qualcomm’s flagship mobile SoC.

When asked if the company plans to launch any other flagship smartphone this year, Chang replied, “Every time there is a brand new CPU with power that we can leverage, we’re always at the forefront doing that. Some people are talking about the timing [of our release] but timing was determined 9 months ago. This is the best CPU out there. When the next flagship CPU comes, HTC will be one of the very first tier doing that.” He added, “When we will look back, it will be clear why HTC introduced [these new phones.] We want to have a couple of months of leadership before the next flagship CPU comes. But that will be in another period of time- not at MWC. Not for us or any other player. I can tell you that for sure. When the new CPU comes, HTC will have another flagship.”

Even though he did not directly refer to the Snapdragon 835 chipset, it is quite clear that he was indeed talking about the Snapdragon 835 chipset. The device being talked about could be the successor to the HTC 10, which might be marketed as the HTC 11.
