HTC today revealed that consumers in Taiwan will be able to pre-order the U Ultra phablet with Sapphire crystal glass screen starting mid-February. The company expects to start shipping the first batch by the end of February or early March. HTC has priced the Sapphire Glass edition at TWD 28,900 in Taiwan, which converts to about $920.
Announced earlier this month, the HTC U Ultra is the manufacturer’s latest flagship handset. The regular variant comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection on top, while the limited edition model gets Sapphire crystal glass on top, which happens to be the second hardest material after diamond. While we have seen quite a few smartphones with sapphire crystal glass lens cover at the back, the U Ultra is the first smartphone to come with Sapphire glass on top of the main display.
The HTC U Ultra features a 5.7-inch Quad HD main display and a secondary ticker display up top, similar to the LG V20. It runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 quad-core SoC, which is now slightly outdated for a flagship handset. In terms of memory, the Sapphire Glass edition comes with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of expandable onboard memory. The rear camera is a 12MP UltraPixel unit with 1.55 micron sized pixels, OIS, and an f/1.8 aperture lens. For selfies, the phablet offers a 16MP selfie snapper on the front. Keeping the lights on is a 3000mAh capacity battery, with fast charging support via the USB Type-C port.
