GTA V’s world map is just as big in scale as major cities like London and San Francisco

Just about every Rockstar fan knows that Grand Theft Auto V is one of the most monumental games in terms of its massive scale and in-game content.

When the game’s official map was leaked from the Brady Games strategy guide, gamers across the world saw the incredible magnitude of GTA V‘s enormous landmass outlined with the various roadways, beaches, rivers and lakes that stretch from Los Santos to Blaine County.

To fully showcase and underline the map’s colossal proportions, GTA V‘s topography was compared to GTA IV‘s Liberty City and San Andreas–both of which paled in comparison and filled less than a third of the map itself.

Now a Reddit user has gone one step further by comparing Grand Theft Auto V‘s full map to real life cities, leading to some truly fascinating results.

When maps of major metropolitan cities like London, San Francisco, Toronto and Manhattan were overlayed across the map of Los Santos and Blaine County, the results indicated that GTA V‘s digital landmass is just as big–and in some cases bigger–in scale than these populated real-world cities.

For those who think the map is small, one Reddit user has made this dynamic overlay that zooms in and gives a close-up view of various regions.

That Rockstar Games could fashion such an amazingly expansive map is impressive enough, but what’s more is the sprawling regions that stretch from Los Santos and Blaine County.

Each area has its own distinct environment, from the highlands and rocky cliffs of Blaine County’s rural expanses to the urban skyscraper-laden streets of Los Santos, the sheer scope of GTA V‘s open-world provides an incredible amount of play time.

It will be interesting to see how exact figures as to how long it takes for a player to walk or drive across the width and height of the island itself–but we’ll have to wait until the game is released to see.

Grand Theft Auto V will hit store shelves in less than a week on Sept. 17, 2013 for Xbox 360 and PS3. For more information check out or recent coverage of head over to the game’s official website.
