At this year’s I/O 2015 developer conference, Google announced that it is currently working with Levi Strauss to come up with smart clothing in the future.
These smart clothes will be made using specially woven fabric that features touch screen like capabilities. These conductive threads can be weaved into various types of fabric such as silk or wool. The touches registered by the conductive threads will be transmitted to devices such as your smartphone by tiny electronics the size of a jacket button. Designers will be able to choose if they want to have conductivity in certain portions of the fabric or the entire cloth.
And the best thing about the smart fabric is that it can be stretched and washed just like any normal fabric. The project has been named ‘Project Jacquard’ by Google and the company hopes to let people interact with their smartphones and other devices through their ‘smart’ clothing. You will be able to make calls or send text messages on your smartphone simply by brushing your fingers against the fabric.
