Google adds touch features to latest test version of Chrome

Google has added a couple of touch-friendly features on its latest Canary test build of Chrome, indicating the company is focusing attention on touch-enabled devices.

The world is slowly but surely moving towards touch-based devices, with Microsoft making touch support an integral part of Windows 8, and Google has decided to test out a few touch-friendly features on its latest nightly Canary test build of Chrome.

One of the features is ‘slide-to-navigate’, which will allow you to swipe left or right to go backwards or forwards on webpages, a trick that is also present on Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8. The other one is pinch-to-zoom, using which one can zoom in and out of websites just like they would on a mobile device. Google’s “Metro” version of Chrome for Windows 8 currently lacks any touch features, but it is clear the company is working on turning that around.

Google’s touch-enabled Chromebook Pixel is perhaps the other reason why the search giant is baking in touch features, and it will be interesting to see what kind of functionality they are able to come with. For now, go ahead and give the Canary build a try if you have a touch-enabled computer by downloading the latest build from the source link.
