Google targets Apple and Beats with acquisition of one of the most prominent names in music streaming.


Music streaming service Songza is now part of Google, according to an announcement by the two companies Tuesday.

Songza, one of the first and most prominent names in the music streaming business, was unique as it didn’t entirely rely on algorithms like its competitors. While Pandora and Spotify are largely driven by algorithms, Songza maintained some modicum of human touch by offering playlists curated by big names in the music industry.

The terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but Google has said to have offered $15 million for the streaming company.

Songza’s future, though not officially announced, will likely be in integration with Google Play Music and YouTube.

“We’ve always worked hard to keep the human curated side and the algorithmic side of the company separate,” Songza CEO Elias Roman told Mashable.

“This is just the beginning.”

Songza currently has around 5.5 million active users, some of which pay for a 0.99 weekly premium subscription to experience the site ad-free.
