Galaxy Gear support coming to eight Samsung devices in near future

Samsung has announced that support for its Galaxy Gear smartwatch will be extended to eight devices through a software update.

At launch, the Galaxy Gear was only compatible with the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition, a major disadvantage that made it somewhat of a niche device. Initially, Samsung had announced that compatibility would be coming to the Galaxy S4, S III, and Note II via the Android 4.3 update (which the S4 has already received), but now the list has been expanded to add five more devices – these include the Galaxy S4 mini, S4 Active, Mega 5.8, Mega 6.3, and S4 Zoom.

This can also be taken as a sign that these devices will be getting updated to Android 4.3, as 4.3 is a requirement for full compatibility with the smartwatch (since previous versions of the OS don’t support low-power Bluetooth 4.0.) The update should begin rolling out in November and work its way to devices through the next couple of months, though it likely won’t change anyone’s stance on the poor value of Samsung’s first foray into the smartwatch market.
