Fuhu reboots Nabi Jr. kid-friendly tablet, now Tegra 3-powered going for $140

Have you noticed how phone sizes keep growing while tablets shrink by the day? It’s true, just think of Sony’s new 6.4-inch Xperia Z Ultra “phone” and Fuhu’s 5-inch Nabi Jr. “tablet”.

Fuhu Nabi Jr.

Who would ever need such a tiny slate? Unpretentious kids, maybe, since that’s the main target audience of Fuhu gadgets. What’s a little strange is the Nabi Jr. was first unveiled back in December 2012, getting a reboot of sorts now.

The rehashed 5-incher looks essentially the same as its predecessor, comes with access to Nabi’s own app store, as well as Amazon’s, but tweaks a few things in the specs department while also raising the price bar.

The biggest upgrade is probably the ditching of that raggedy old Nvidia Tegra 2 processor for a slightly newer one in the Tegra 3 family. The chip is of course a quad-core unit, but the clock speed is unknown.

Second on the list of all important bumps, there’s on-board Android 4.1 Jelly Bean now, replacing the 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich of the first-gen Nabi Jr. Hmm, what else? Oh, yeah, the internal storage space has been quadrupled (!!!), from 4 to 16 GB and the 512 MB of RAM have magically turned into a whole gig.

Not too shabby and there’s also microSD support, a 2 MP camera, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0. Since this is a tab for small children, the design is not exactly its strongest point, with more emphasis on robustness and reliability than elegance and sleekness.

Unfortunately, the display is still very, very modest, boasting an 800 x 480 pixels resolution, which is why I’m not all too sure the new Nabi Jr. is worth the $139.99 charged by J&R, Best Buy and a couple of other American retailers. Am I right or am I right? I’m right, aren’t I?
