Fon’s $30 Gramofon Wi-Fi router streams Spotify

Gramofon aims to make it easier for you to stream music from cloud services like Spotify.

Gramofon is a Wi-Fi router from Fon that streams music from the cloud. Fon is a crowdsourced Wi-Fi network provider that has over 7 million access points around the world. To create a new access point, called a Fon Spot, all you have to do is use a Fon router that splits your internet connection into two streams: One for your home use, and the other for guest sharing. The guest shared network is blocked by a firewall, so you do not have to worry about unsecured access to your home network.

Fon is bringing its crowdsourced Wi-Fi technology to the Gramofon. The router connects to a local network via Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and can be controlled by multiple users so long as they are also connected to the same network. Since it does not feature a built-in speaker, it comes with a 3.5mm audio jack and an RCA adapter that can be connected to a stereo.

After the Gramofon is connected to the home network, you can log in using your Facebook or Google accounts from any Android or iOS device. After logging in to the device, you can select the music you want to play. An added advantage with the Gramofon is that since it directly streams music from Spotify, you do not have to connect your mobile to the router after selecting your music. Once you finalize the songs, you can leave the room and the music would still be playing. The initial version of Gramofon does not let you block friends from playing any music they want, but that functionality will be added later on.

The router streams only from Spotify for now, but is set to stream from Grooveshark, Rdio, Soundcloud, Pandora, Google Play, Deezer, Amazon, Rhapsody, Songza, WahWah and Slacker later this year.

“Our goal is to bring music back into the living room,” says Martin Varsavsky, founder and CEO of Fon. “We have been working on this for a year now— what started as a passion project is now a living, breathing, incredible product that will transform the music experience, making music social and enjoyed by all involved.”

Gramofon will initially work only in the USA, Spain and Brazil. The router is available on Kickstarter for $50 for the black version and $60 for the white variant. Head over to the source link below to get the Gramofon.
