The development team of the unsuccessful kickstarter project has stopped working on the game and have disbanded until further notice.

In 2002, a little game called Eternal Darkness was released for the Gamecube to near universal critical acclaim. While it didn’t sell too well, the title became a cult classic among gamers and put developer Silicon Knights on the map. Unfortunately, Silicon Knights made a few bad choices along the road, (remember Too Human and X-men: Destiny?) causing the studio to shut its doors.

From these ruins rose Precursor Gamers, a studio made from veterans of the Eternal Darkness development team. Their project: a spiritual successor to arguably their greatest game. Thus, Shadow of the Eternals was born. Unfortunately, the game has had a long and arduous development process. Unable to find a publisher to back them, the team took to kickstarter twice, failing to meet its funding goal on both occasions.

Despite these setbacks, Precursor games had said that they would soldier on with the development process, and things were looking up when the game got a place in the Steam Greenlight program. However, it seems that the studio’s financial woes finally caught up with them. The team at Precursor games are stopping work on Shadow of the Eternals indefinitely.

The chief creative officer of the project, Denis Dyack, broke the news on the official forums. “It is with a heavy heart that we have decided to put the Shadow of the Eternals project on hold,” wrote Dyack. “Many of us will be taking a break.”

However, there is a glimmer of hope for fans who have been following the project closely. Dyack has said that the team may come together and finish the game “when the time is right”. The official forums will remain open so that the community can continue to interact, but it seems that the idea of another Eternal Darkness is now a far off dream.
