DayZ Alpha version amasses 400,000 sales in first week and gets new update

The standalone version of DayZ is only in its alpha stage, but that didn’t stop the game from exploding; in its first week alone it sold over 400,000 copies.

DayZ Alpha

DayZ started out as a popular mod for Arma II that created a realistic open-world survival horror experience, and exceeding demand has since spawned a standalone game from Bohemia Interactive.

Although this version of DayZ is in its formative Early Access stage via Steam, gamers are quite eager to jump into the gritty, zombie-infested world with their fellow players in an effort to survive the undead apocalypse. How eager? Bohemia Interactive has recently stated that  “over 40.000 concurrent users pushed the DayZ Alpha servers to their limits” the first week it was on the market.

If you’re looking to pick up the game, be sure to remember that it’s in its early alpha stages and is quite unfinished. You’ll be playing a vital part in the game’s overall development and providing valuable feedback to the developers, and will most likely experience a multitude of glitches, bugs and the like.

“DayZ Early Access is your chance to experience DayZ as it evolves throughout its development process. Be aware that our Early Access offer is a representation of our core pillars, and the framework we have created around them.

“It is a work in progress and therefore contains a variety of bugs. We strongly advise you not to buy and play the game at this stage unless you clearly understand what Early Access means and are interested in participating in the ongoing development cycle.”

Additionally Bohemia Interactive has just pushed out their first update for DayZ, which adds in a few fixes to some common server and design problems:

Design: Balancing of player spawns (ongoing)
Server: Dead player cleanup (time based)
Design: M9130 Bayonet can now open cans
Server: BattlEye Anti-Cheat (Client as well)
Server: Initial implementation for Sub-Private Hives (ongoing)
Server: Initial implementation for regular & hardcore Public Hive

Server: Dedicated Server crash related to player skeleton
Server: Player location rubberbanding (ongoing)
Server: Large delay in item manipulation and “inventory tetris”

DayZ ALpha3

DayZ remains one of the more interesting choices as far as an immersive zombie apocalypse gameplay experience, especially given the multiplayer interactions. Players can team up with others to scavenge and even hunt down resource-hoarding survivors for their precious goodies, putting an emphasis on survival while balancing out the bleak and bloody violence of horror-based games.

There is also great emphasis on role-playing, as players can amass weapons as well as weapon customization, crafting, and an intuitive inventory system designed to compliment the survival elements quite well.

It’ll be interesting to see where the game is in a few months, and how the 400k strong community shapes and molds the gameplay into its final form.

DayZ Alpha is available as part of Steam’s Early Access Program for $29.99. For more information please visit the game’s official listing.
