Conflicting new Samsung Galaxy S5 mini info points to 4.5 or 4.8-inch display

As it so often happens with Android devices, Samsung seems to have tested multiple different hardware configurations for the upcoming Galaxy S5 mini, one with a 4.8-inch display and Snapdragon 400 chip and the other measuring 4.5 inches in diagonal while packing S800 or S801 heat.

It looked like game over for the S5 mini, aka S5 Dx, in the rumor mill yesterday, as the phone’s design was supposedly revealed after specifications also came to light. But as it turns out, the buzz-building campaign is just getting started.

And make no mistake, Sammy is probably orchestrating it from behind the curtain. Otherwise, how do you explain the myriad of incompatible intel exposed of late? As I’m sure you remember, the diminutive GS5 was first tipped to keep size relatively contained, with a 4.5-inch panel, and settle in the processing power department too, thanks to a mid-end Snapdragon 400 CPU.

But GFX Bench, the graphics benchmark database that almost never divulges inaccurate info, lists the SM-G800H, which we believe is the international Galaxy S5 mini, as a massive (by “mini” standards) 4.8-inch handheld with 720p resolution and a 1.4 GHz Snapdragon 400 SoC.

Mind you, a measly two years back Samsung’s proudest, top-of-the-line smartphone, the Galaxy S3, sported a screen exactly 4.8 inches in size, so if GFX Bench’s report pans out, I guess we can all agree that escalated pretty quickly. It might have really got out of hand fast.

Unless it’s erroneous, and our second source is correct. A User Agent Profile, corroborated by one of GSM Arena’s reliable tipsters, suggests the SM-G800A, which is AT&T’s S5 mini, boasts an easier to contain 4.5-inch footprint, with the same HD res but, get this, a 2.3 GHz quad-core chip.

Wait, so the munchkin could essentially tie the full-sized S5 in raw speed, lowering the processor’s clock speed with only 0.2 GHz? That’s crazy. Yet possible. Look at Sony’s Xperia Z1 Compact. Also possible, the Galaxy S5 mini will be made available in two versions, one “unapologetic” and the other extra-affordable.

In any case, expect the rest of the spec sheet to include the following:

  • 1.5 GB RAM
  • Pre-loaded Android 4.4.2 KitKat
  • 16 GB built-in storage space
  • MicroSD card slot
  • 8 MP rear-facing camera
  • 2 MP front snapper
  • 2,100 mAh battery
  • IP67 certification for water and dust protection
