Chinese tech company offering Doomsday Vacation for upcoming apocalypse

A Chinese tech company is giving it's workers the day off next Thursday and Friday, in anticipation of the coming end of days as "predicted" by the Mayan calendar.

For years, we've been hearing about the upcoming Mayan apocalypse. On December 21st, 2012, which is next Friday, the Mayan calendar officially runs out, and a lot of people have been claiming this means the end of the world is upon us. The Mayans were astoundingly skilled at mathematics and astronomy, and their ancient calendar managed to predict the movements of astronomical bodies and the passing of time with an incredible accuracy. As an example, the Mayan calendar has estimated the length of one year on Earth to be 365.2420 days. The currently accepted length of a year is 365.2422 days, a difference of just 17 seconds.

I'm hoping for a cool apocalypse… Zombies would be fun.

Because of the Mayans' skills at telling time and their calendar's abrupt ending, a lot of people have drawn the conclusion that if the end of the calendar quite simply means the end of the world. Of course, the Mayans themselves never claimed such a thing. Next Friday marks the end of a 5125-year long astronomical cycle for which the calendar calculated. If anything, the Mayans believed that the end of the cycle would involved the ushering in of a new age and a positive transformation for it. Also, there's absolutely no scientific evidence that the world is going to end.

Nevertheless, a Chinese tech company called Chengdu Higgses Internet Technology Company is giving their workers a long weekend, just in case. Most likely, this is a light hearted way to give overworked employees some well deserved time off. You can read the company's memo below:

To all Comrades in Arms:

In light of the special meaning of December 21, 2012, and after careful consideration, the company has reached the following decision: [To make] 2012 "Doomsday Vacation" arrangements, with vacation days on December 20 (a Thursday) and December 21 (a Friday), for two days in total.

We hope that during this vacation time, everyone will take the following steps:

1. Please take measures to prevent fire and theft.

2. You may choose to entirely shut down your cell phone for the duration of the vacation to ensure you are not bothered.

3. As everyone is usually always busy with work, we suggest you take advantage of this "final" time to spend more time with your closest family.

We wish everyone a meaningful "doomsday."
