China Mobile reportedly keen on selling the iPhone but ‘commercial and technical’ issues remain

China Mobile is the biggest wireless carrier in the world, but it doesn’t officially sell Apple devices. The company has been rumored to be in talks with the carrier, but no deal has surfaced as yet.

Last month it was reported that Apple CEO Tim Cook had flown to China in order to meet with local partners there. He is said to have met with other carriers as well as with China Mobile. A deal between the two has been rumored for quite some time, but it hasn’t materialized as yet. Based on its sheer number of subscribers, which is around 700 million, China Mobile remains the largest wireless carrier in the world. It would definitely play to Apple’s advantage if its iPhone was officially sold to even a fraction of those subscribers.

While reporting the carrier’s quarterly fiscal results, Chairman Xi Guohua said that both sides sound “keen” to bring the iPhone to China Mobile. He added that only “commercial and technical” issues remain and once those hurdles are solved, Apple and China Mobile can embark on a mutually beneficial relationship. The comments come at a time when Apple is consistently being rumored to be close to unveiling two new smartphones next month.

Rumor has it that Apple will unveil iPhone 5S and the low cost iPhone 5C at an event on September 10th. China Mobile may very well carrying both smartphones if all issues are taken care of in the coming months.
