Brace yourselves, the first iPhone 5C clone is already here… and it’s cringeworthy

Guess who’s back, back again, Goophone’s back, tell a friend. Cheesy opening, I know, but when dealing with the world’s first Apple iPhone 5C clone, manufactured by none other than the king of clones, it just feels right.

But even if Goophone’s skills, dedication and proficiency in design piracy have become notorious a long time ago (remember when they threatened to sue Apple for copyright infringement?), you still have to admit it’s surprising to see the Goophone i5C, the student, land earlier than the iPhone 5C, the master. Dayum, these guys are good!

And dayum, is the i5C an exact copy of Apple’s “unapologetically plastic” handheld! We have the pics and even a (muted) hands-on video review of the thing to prove it. But I’m afraid the Chinese took all those rumors about the “C” in iPhone 5C standing for “cheap” way too serious.

True, their rip-offs have never pushed the boundaries too far in terms of specs, cutting more than just a few corners to keep the pricing bar low, but this i5C is downright pitiful. The 4-inch screen boasts an 854 x 480 pixels resolution (yes, really), there’s a dismal dual-core 1.2 GHz MediaTek CPU (trying to) run the show beneath the hood, along with 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB of on-board storage.

Sheesh, that sounds like something out of mobile technology history books. But at least Android Jelly Bean (4.1 or 4.2, not sure) butters up the software, though there’s a skin on top to make it look like iOS 7 and, apparently, no Google Play access. Wait, what?

That truly may be the biggest, darkest nightmare of Android aficionados, albeit you might find a little solace in the thing’s alleged 8 MP rear-facing camera and 2,000 mAh battery (emphasis on alleged, okay?).

As far as pricing goes, the iPhony (clever, eh?) appears to wash some of its sins away, going for $119… on pre-orders, with shipping to start September 20. Anyone thinking of picking one of these crapfests up? Maybe to play a prank on an Apple fanboy? Only to play a prank on a fanboy, right?
