BLU Dash 4.5 released: large display, stock Android 4.2 and quad-core power for just $140

While the Asian cheap smartphone market is flourishing by the day, scoring a solid Android gadget for less than $300 continues to be a great challenge in the States. But not if you give an OEM like BLU a chance, since the company has just released the $140 Dash 4.5.

BLU Dash 4.5

Mind you, that’s 140 bucks sans any contractual obligations, which is less than half of what AT&T will charge for the Nokia Lumia 1020… with 24-month agreements. True, pitting the Dash 4.5 against any high-end smartphone from a well-established manufacturer is like comparing apples and, I don’t know, grapefruits, but you get the idea.

And ultimately, the BLU Dash 4.5 doesn’t even rock the pitiful specs one would expect. It sports a large 4.5-inch display, runs a completely stock Android 4.2 Jelly Bean experience and packs a quad-core MediaTek 6589M processor clocked at 1.2 GHz.

And yes, I know that quad-core chip can’t even hold its own against certain dual-core units from Qualcomm, but look at it this way – did you ever, ever, ever think you were going to be able to buy something that was not a single-core device for $140? I didn’t think so.

Now, as much as I would like to defend all of BLU’s choices for Dash 4.5 specs, the display’s resolution (854 x 480 pixels) and 512 MB of RAM are pretty terrible. Also, it’s been a while since I’ve seen a smartphone measuring 12 mm in thickness. The 4 GB of on-board storage are not so very hot either, but at least there’s microSD support for expanding it.

To end the article on a cheerful note, I think we can all agree to file Dash 4.5’s dual-SIM support, 5 MP rear camera and 2,000 mAh battery under strong points. You know, considering.

You can buy this dirt-cheap jewel from a number of US retailers already, including Amazon. As for those that are green with envy with Americans (for a change), I say you shouldn’t worry too much. BLU is planning to enter the Indian market soon and something tells me that won’t be all.
