Bloomberg: Microsoft to announce layoffs this week

Headcount reductions come as Microsoft works to integrate Nokia’s handset division into the company.

Shortly after Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella warned that changes were coming to Microsoft in a long memo published online, a report from Bloomberg says that big job cuts could be coming to the company as early as this week.

According to Bloomberg, the job cuts may be the biggest in Microsoft’s history. In 2009, as the company was reeling from the impact of the 2008 financial crisis, Microsoft let 5,800 employees go.

Bloomberg says the cutbacks will be focused in the company’s marketing department as well as the software quality assurance division.

With the addition of 30,000 Nokia employees to Microsoft’s ranks, the current headcount stands at 127,000 — which is much bigger than Apple or Google.
