UK retailer opens BlackBerry Q5 pre-orders, price set at £350 ($545)

BlackBerry Q10’s slightly more modest brother, the Q5, is now available for UK pre-orders via online retailer Unlocked-Mobiles. The price is set at a fairly steep £349.98 including VAT, which translates into around €410 or $545.

As you may remember (but probably not, as no one really made a fuss about it), the Q5 was formally introduced about a month ago. At the time, there were no details revealed about pricing or exact release dates.

What BlackBerry’s CEO Thorsten Heins made clear however was this was not a phone intended for the major smartphone markets (read North America), but one targeted specifically at Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Unfortunately for BB, the QWERTY-toting device doesn’t really seem to qualify for the title of “budget” handheld. True, it is considerably cheaper than the Q10, which currently goes for £530 in the UK, but the bang for the buck is just not there as one would expect.

Boasting both a full physical keyboard and a 3.1-inch IPS LCD touchscreen  with 720 x 720 pixels resolution, the Q5 comes with 2 full GB of RAM in tow, but a fairly modest dual-core 1.2 GHz Snapdragon S4 SoC.

Furthermore, there are only 8 GB of on-board storage (albeit expandable via microSD), while the rear camera is a modest 5 MP unit. And don’t even get me started on the decently sized 2,180 mAh battery that for some reason is non-removable.

Bottom line, if BlackBerry wants to make this a bigger hit than the Q10 and Z10, a price shave has to be considered. Oh, yeah, I almost forgot, Unlocked-Mobiles says Q5 stock is “expected middle of July”, so there’s still time for Heins & co. to make things right.
