BIOSTAR has announced a new addition to its product lineup in the M200 series of solid state drives. The BIOSTAR M200 Series M.2 solid state drives have been designed for high-performance, low-profile applications and are intended for notebooks, SFF PCs and HTPCs.
While the M200 series SSDs do offer great performance, they use the older SATA 3 6Gb/s interface and not the latest PCI Express Gen 3 x4. This means the performance on offer will be comparable to regular 2.5” form factor SSDs that use the SATA 3 6Gb/s interface. If you are an enthusiast, you should definitely take a look at the much faster PCI Express Gen 3 x4 SSDs that can deliver significantly higher performance. On the other hand, if you are upgrading from a traditional hard disk drive and want a compact M.2 drive to enjoy better performance, the BIOSTAR M200 series is worth a look.
In terms of performance, BIOSTAR claims the M200 series drives achieve sequential read speeds of up to 530 MB/s while write speeds go up to 410 MB/s on the 240GB version and 380 MB/s on the 120GB version. The drives are powered by a Marvell controller and utilize a BGA flash memory package that is claimed to offer improved read and write speeds.
