Bethesda talks of Prey 2’s delay

Prey 2 has been in development for over five years and slipping between different game studios since its acquisition by Bethesda. Pete Hines, Bethesda’s head of PR, has confirmed the game is still being made but wants people to understand that games like Prey 2 take a lot of time.

“We appreciate that folks are displeased that we haven’t had any update or any info on Prey 2, but whatever your displeasure is, you can’t even be remotely as unhappy about it as us.”

So what’s the reason behind the delay? Hines states that Prey 2 is simply “not good enough.” When asked about their working relationship with Human Head, he stated they’ve “spent years and millions of dollars and a ton of effort trying to help [them] make a great Prey 2 game. What we said the last time we said anything was that it’s not up to our quality standards.”

Hines understands that there is a lot of cynicism surrounding the relationship between developer and publisher, but Bethesda needs to be the guys that step back and are practical about it. “What is the chance that we have some amazing, unbelievable game and we’re just not talking about it for no reason? Zero. This is a business.”

Hines noted that Bethesda did not want to continue blindly “but wanted to be specific about why it wasn’t good enough and what needs to be done”.

“When that gets addressed and changed or whatever, at that point we can give an update.” He says that Bethesda are committed to getting the game to a polished state but “can’t keep throwing money at it” and hoping it will eventually work.

Hines also stated that they’re aware of the popularity and fanbase for the game, but knows that they would be just as disappointed as the developers and publishers to release a subpar project. The lack of updates are not always a bad sign, I mean just ask Valve and Half Life 3.
