After announcing its new ultra-durable motherboard in the Z170 series earlier this month, Asus has now launched the TUF Sabertooth Z170 Mark 1. Designed for Skylake processors, the board offers USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-A and Type-C, five-year warranty and military-class components.
A welcome change in the design has to do with the black and gunmetal finish for Thermal Armor, with two fans blowing heat away from hardware on the board, such as the VRM and M.2 slot. As with earlier models in the TUF series, the Sabertooth Z170 comes with a reinforced backplate called TUF Fortifier that’s designed to hold weights up to 10kgs.
The Sabertooth Z170 offers four DIMM slots, with a maximum of 64GB DDR4 RAM clocked at 2400/2133MHz. The expansion slots allow you to install quad Nvidia cards in SLI or four AMD-based Radeon cards in CrossFireX.
For audio, there’s a Realtek ALC1150 codec that delivers eight-channel sound. For networking, you get an Intel I218-V NIC for Gigabit Ethernet. Connectivity includes two SATA Express wwith 10Gbit/s and four 6Gbit/s SATA, one USB 3.1 Type-A, one USB 3.1 Type-C, six USB 3.0 and a total of eight USB 2.0 ports. Display connectors include a DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 1.4a.
The board comes with dust protectors on rear ports to prevent ingress of dust, a dedicated onboard processor called TUF ICe that monitors temperature of components and offers ingrained control over fan speeds. TUF Thermal Radar 2 has 12 fan connectors, allowing you to monitor video card temperature and optimize cooling with one click. With TUF Detective 2, you get the ability to view system statistics wirelessly.
