Asus made two big announcements at Computex in Taipei. The first is its new Android Wear smartwatch the ZenWatch 2 and the second is the ZenFone Selfie smartphone with a 13MP front camera.
The ZenWatch 2 comes in two different variants. First one is essentially the same size as the ZenWatch launched last year, with a 41mm face and 22mm band. If you are more interested in a smaller watch, then you can consider the smaller variant that has a 37mm face and an 18mm band.
Asus is using an OLED display on the ZenFone 2 with 2.5D Gorilla Glass 3 on top for protection. Powering the smartwatch will be a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, although the exact model hasn’t been revealed yet. Water and dust resistance capabilities have improved with this year’s model as it comes with a higher IP67 certification. That means the smartwatch can handle being submerged up to 3.28 feet deep water for as long as 30 minutes.
No details on the availability of the ZenFone 2 yet but it will be offered in silver, gunmetal and rose gold color options with rubber, leather, and metal straps. Asus is planning a luxury model of the smartwatch that will come with a Swarovski crystals band.
Apart from the ZenWatch 2, Asus also revealed a new smartphone the ZenFone Selfie. As you can guess by the name, it is a smartphone that focusses on the front-camera, taking on devices such as the HTC Desire Eye and the Sony Xperia C4. It packs a 5.5-inch IPS LCD display with 1080 x 1920 resolution, Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 64-bit octa-core SoC, and dual 13MP cameras. The front camera is of course the highlight of the show, with an up to 88-degree field of view.
The ZenFone Selfie will be offered in various finishes such as White, Pink, and Aqua Blue. No details on pricing and availability have been revealed yet.
