Apple officially announces the iPhone 5S and 5C

The iPhone 5C comes in five colors, making for a bright visual display.

Today Apple introduced two new products that continue the evolution of the company’s iLegacy: the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S.

The iPhone 5C is a colorful and more affordable version that doesn’t have many of the bells and whistles of its counterpart — it’s lacking in the Touch ID fingerprint scanner, for instance — but it does have the basics such as 1080p video recording, a 8mp iSight camera, and it packs in Apple’s new A6 chip.

And, of course, it supports iOS 7.

As far as pricing, the 5C ranges in two different forms: the 16GB model priced at $99 and the 32GB model at $199, both of which require a standard two-year contract.

The real show-stealer was the iPhone 5S, which Apple labeled “the most forward-thinking phone anyone’s ever made”, and was thoroughly dissected and showcased during the event in Cupertino. The handset comes in three colors: Space Gray, Gold (champagne), and Silver.

The A7 chip affords the new model with console-level graphics with Open GL/ES 3.0 support, and to showcase the performance, Epic Games took the stage to unveil Infinity Blade III, which will launch alongside the 5S. Apple also highlighted the new M7 chip, which is a big deal to joggers and health nuts, as it relays data from the phone’s accelerometer, gyro and compass to afford a new era of fitness apps.

Apple touted the capabilities of the 5S’s new iSight camera as well, which features a dynamic array of additions including a TrueTone flash with staples like burst-mode and slow-mo.

The new TouchID fingerprint sensor was one of the most anticipated announcements, and Apple didn’t disappoint: the iPhone 5S’ home button duals as a fingerprint scanner, which can authenticate multiple fingers and be turned in 360 degrees.

The scanner not only alleviates the need for pass codes to unlock a phone, but it can also be used to verify purchases made through the iTunes store. All in all the feature is a nice leap forward, and offers a more personalized experience with the obvious benefits of enhanced security.

Apple’s new iPhone 5S is more robust, and thusly more expensive than the 5C, but interestingly enough the handset will launch for the same price as the original iPhone 5: 16GB is priced at $199, 32GB at $299 and the 64GB at $399–all of which require a contract.

Both the iPhone 5C and 5S will be available on Sept. 20, 2013 across nine markets including North America, parts of Europe and select Asian countries.

Additionally Apple will start taking pre-orders for the 5C starting Sept. 13, and by December, they expect to launch both phones in 100 countries across 270 carriers worldwide.
