Apple announces the iPad Air and iPad Mini

Apple unveiled its next-generation iPad, which will be called the iPad Air. The iPad Mini has also been refreshed and comes with a Retina display.

The iPad Air is thinner, lighter and faster. It comes with a 9.7-inch Retina display with a 43 percent thinner bezel size and is 20 percent thinner than the iPad 4. The iPad Air weighs just 1 pound, making it the lightest full-size tablet in the world. The tablet comes with an A7 64-bit SoC that was featured in the iPhone 5S. Also included is the M7 motion processor.

The tablet comes with faster Wi-Fi that can now achieve downloads of 300 Mbit, 5 megapixel iSight camera, a full-HD FaceTime camera and 10-hour battery life. Similar to the iPhone 5S and 5C, the iPad Air comes with the most number of LTE bands so that users can access 4G networks from all around the world.

The iPad Air 16 GB Wi-Fi variant will cost $499, and the cellular version will cost $629. The device will be available from November 1 in a host of countries that include China.

The iPad Mini now features a 7.9-inch Retina display with a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels. The iPad Mini has similar internal hardware as the iPad Air, and boasts a 10-hour battery life. Both models will be available in silver and white, space gray and black color variations.

The new iPad Mini will be available for $399 and will be available later in November. The last-gen iPad Mini will now cost $299.

Apple mentioned that it has sold 170 million iPads, and that the iPad is used four times more than any other tablet in the market available today. Also stated is the fact that just five days after launch, a total of 200 million devices were on iOS 7, and a third of all iDevices are now on iOS 7.
