Alcatel intros curvalicious One Touch Idol Alpha, plus Full HD Idol X with zero bezels

Just because Alcatel came forward with the One Touch Idol S and Idol Mini a few days ago, that doesn’t mean the company is all done with showing off its IFA 2013 guns. Not even close, as the French are actually only now pulling out the big guns, both figuratively and literally.

Not that the newly unveiled Idol Alpha and Idol X could ever be used as weapons. But they’re big. The former boasts a 4.7-inch IPS panel, while the latter ups the ante even further, to 5 inches.

What’s odd is, despite its courageous name, the “Alpha” dog keeps it modest in certain departments, like the display resolution – 1,280 x 720 pixels. The 1.2 GHz quad-core processor doesn’t exactly spell out high-end mobile technology either, but fortunately the phone’s unique design is likely to make up for that and then some.

Not only is the Idol Alpha crazy thin (7.5 mm profile), but it also rocks a premium aluminum metal frame and shiny translucent edges that light up on occasion (like when you’re watching a video or have unread notifications).

Sounds… well, eccentric, but at least Alcatel is trying to stand out from the crowd with something other than software gimmicks. Plus, the Alpha is said to have an uneven, curvaceous body, though I’m afraid the existing press shots don’t do it justice.

Alcatel Idol X

But let’s talk numbers and cold, objective specs for a sec, as the 4.7-incher is not exactly a pushover from this standpoint either. It comes with 16 GB of on-board storage, microSD support, an outstanding 13.1 MP rear camera, 1.3 MP front snapper, 1 GB of RAM and 2,000 mAh battery. Not bad… for what we think will cost $350 give or take starting sometime in Q4.

As for the 5-inch Idol X, this is actually being reintroduced to the world now following a first unveiling back in February. Already up for grabs in a (small) number of European markets, the X should expand over the next few months, which is pretty big news.

Why? Well, the thing is more technically impressive than the Alpha and is quite the looker, too. Its vertical bezels are practically non-existent, it measures an incredible 6.9 mm thick, weighs in at 130 grams and on top of it all sports a Full HD IPS screen, quad-core 1.5 GHz processor, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and 13.1 MP camera. Is Alcatel on a roll or what?
