Acer announces Iconia A3 tablet: 10-inch screen, quad-core CPU, €249 price tag

As part of its pre-IFA announcements, Acer has unveiled the Iconia A3, a mid-range 10-inch tablet that runs on Android 4.2 and offers high-quality sound and unique software features.

The Iconia A3 is aimed at the mid-range market, and as a result features a IPS display with a lowly 1280 x 800 resolution that won’t turn any heads. It is powered by a quad-core 1.2GHz processor, though it’s an entry-level Cortex-A7 unit, probably from MediaTek, and is accompanied by 1 gigs of RAM.

The A3 is running on a mostly stock version of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, though Acer is touting a number of unique software features. First up is Acer IntelliSpin, a feature that ensures the tablet’s screen will continue to rotate according to the device’s orientation even when lying flat. The other feature is Touch WakeApp, which provides users with fast access to their favourite apps straight from the lockscreen, though this one is something you’ll find on devices from other manufacturers as well.

A high-quality sound experience is also an important part of the tablet – Acer claims the A3 provides great sound thanks to optical placement of speakers, and 5.1-channel surround sound on headphones with the inbuilt Dolby Digital Plus chip. Other features include 16 and 32GB of storage expandable via a microSD slot, a 5-megapixel camera capable of shooting 1080p video (Acer also announced the Liquid S2 today, which sports 4k video recording), and up to 9 hours of video playback.

The Acer Iconia A3 will cost €249 for the 16GB Wi-Fi variant when it launches in Europe, Middle East and Africa in early October, with a 3G model following in November with a €299 price tag.
