2017 Apple Watch rumored to use a Micro LED display

Apple Watch

Taiwanese publication Digitimes in its latest report suggests that Apple could switch to Micro LED panels for its 2017 Apple Watch models.

The info reportedly comes from Taiwan-based supply chain makers. Apple had acquired US-based Micro LED firm LuxVue Technology in May 2014 and had set up a R&D center in northern Taiwan for development of new display technologies in April 2015.

While the idea of seeing a Micro LED display on the 2017 Apple Watch certainly sounds exciting, we suggest you take the info with a few grains of salt. The product cost for Micro LED displays is said to be higher than OLED panels, so it could be possible that Apple could choose to delay the switch to Micro LED panels. Even if things do go as planned, the first Apple Watch with a Micro LED display isn’t expected to be out before the second half of 2017.
