Let’s take a look at the 3D Mark scorage:
This is interesting. Even though the 512Mb card is clocked at 50Mhz less on
memory and has only a 5Mhz core advantage over the 256Mb, the 3D Mark 05 scores
are significantly higher.
The 512Mb is :
- 3% faster at 1024 x 768
- 4% faster at 1280 x 1024
- 5% faster at 1600
- 3% faster at 1920 x 1440
We see that the extra 256Mb of memory on the 512Mb card does help out with
3D Mark performance even at 1024 x 768. This is not a big increase in
performance, but it does help. We also see that the performance gap between the
256Mb and 512Mb cards widen as we increase the resolutions up to 1600 x 1200.
Above that, this gap drops back to 3%. This may mean that at 1920 x 1440, the
card is more bottle-necked by the memory speed rather than size.
