Xbox One to introduce indie game self publishing

Microsoft is likely to update its policy on indie game publishing soon, and it’s good: If sources are to be believed, the Xbox One will have self publishing of indie titles.

Anonymous sources have told Game Informer that Microsoft is planning to announce an updated policy on indie games that will allow developers to self-publish their titles on the Xbox One without needing to find a publishing partner.

Along with the policy change, they also hope to revise their lengthy certification process for such games. Their aim is for certification to take no more than 14 days for approval. In addition, Microsoft is planning to eliminate costly game update charges.

If these rumors turn out to be true, it would be good news for indie developers, and in turn, might boost the reputation of the currently struggling Microsoft console.

The sources seem to confirm a tip from Gary Carr, creative director of Lionhead Studios, who recently stated that Microsoft was planning to reveal new Xbox One policies “very soon”. “I certainly know that Microsoft want to talk at future press events about their relationships with indies,” said Carr.

There have previously been concerns about the Xbox One’s support for indie developers. It was reported that indie games would not receive their own channels in the Xbox One Live Arcade, and would instead be grouped into a single large pile. This rumor led former Xbox chief Don Mattirck to “pledge support” for indie games.
