Verizon iPhone 4 debuts with Personal Hotspot and iOS 4.2.5

Verizon subscribers rejoice! The highly-anticipated CDMA iPhone 4 is officially launched yesterday, as opposed to having to subscribe to AT&T where it is the only operator offering the device until now. But that’s not all, the new CDMA iPhone 4 also offers Personal Hotspot feature that lets you share your Internet connection with up to five Wi-Fi devices.

Verizon followed up on their strong showing at CES 2011 by launching the highly-anticipated CDMA iPhone 4 on Tuesday, effectively breaking AT&T’s stranglehold on the market. Finally, iPhone users in the US have the choice to choose an alternative carrier, four years after the launch of the original iPhone in January 2007.

Shipping from 10 February onwards, the CDMA iPhone 4 shares the same Retina display, 5-megapixel camera, A4 chip and overall aesthetic design as the current crop of GSM iPhone 4s. But on top of that, it also brings two new features to the table – the latest iOS, 4.2.5, and a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, called Personal Hotspot, which supports up to five connected devices at a time.

With the inclusion of the Personal Hotspot feature in iOS 4.2.5, iPhone users can finally enjoy what their Android-toting compatriots have been able to do since the release of Android 2.2 ‘Froyo’ – the freedom to create a mobile hotspot anytime and anywhere, without the hassle of jail-breaking and installing third-party solutions such as MyWi.

There is no indication as to whether the Personal Hotspot feature will find its way to the GSM variant of the iPhone 4, however, watch this space for updates.
