UE BOOM 2 Review: A Nifty Pill-like Boombox

Logitech’s Ultimate Ears UE BOOM 2 is the successor to its original UE BOOM . This portable speaker fixes some of its predecessor’s flaws in the audio department, but remains rather similar to the older BOOM in terms of design and outlook. For S$319.00, it is a tad expensive, but it’s design and sound quality, makes it remarkable unique.

Design

The UE BOOM 2 looks very similar to the UE BOOM , with miniscule changes in the department of aesthetics.

A 360-degree portable speaker, the BOOM 2 is cylindrical in shape, looking very much like a pill. It has its volume rockers on the length of its body and the power button at the top of the cylinder. The bottom of the cylinder, holds the charging port and an auxiliary jack.

The colour scheme of the UE BOOM 2 is chic as always, giving off a very youthful hipster feel, which is something most teens and young adults will like.

With nearly no plastic on the outside, the UE BOOM 2 is made of rubber and cloth, which makes it feel very sporty and at the same time, premium.

The UE BOOM 2 is now waterproof, with a rating of IPX7, which means it can be submerged underwater up to a depth of 1 metre and stay there for 30 minutes, which is pretty incredible. The only useful purpose and point to this is probably for your pool parties if you get clumsy.

Audio Quality

The UE BOOM 2 has a pretty incredible volume, being 25% louder than the original UE BOOM . Logitech has changed the drivers for the UE BOOM 2 to make it sound crisper and to raise its maximum volume.

Similar to outdoor speakers, the UE BOOM 2 specialises in the highs and the mids, since those frequencies can travel further outdoors. The BOOM 2 hence does fairly well in those departments. The bass is decent, but slightly disappointing for a speaker this price. It’s present, but it doesn’t quite pack a punch. Listening to The Chainsmokers didn’t quite make us want to throw our hands up in the air and chill, but just listening to Daya sing was an absolute delight.

Connectivity

Connecting the UE BOOM 2 is pretty effortless, just tap on the power button followed by the bluetooth pairing button (hold it) and it will appear on your bluetooth options on your laptop or smartphone. Once paired, it will automatically pair with your device from here on out.

Battery Life

The UE BOOM 2 has a crazy battery life of 15 hours. Yes, you can play 15 hours of music without letting it rest, it’s a cross country runner in steroids. You can also leave your phone 100 feet away from the BOOM 2 and it will still work just fine, although I would stay within 75 feet of it. This does not take into account if you have a physical wall between you and your UE BOOM 2, which will turn it into a whole different ball game.

Verdict

The UE BOOM 2 is a solid pill-like portable speaker that can withstand harsh treatment. It’s highs sound fantastic and its volume is rock solid. The design is absolutely lovely and its battery life is insane. We only hoped that the bass of the UE BOOM 2 was stronger for this price tag of S$319.00.
