Ubisoft has recently fired Patrice Desilets, the creator of one the labels most profitable and acclaimed franchises, Assassin's Creed. In response to his "unceremonious" termination, Desilets reveals that he will "fight Ubisoft vigorously".
The creator of Ubisoft's landmark Assassin's Creed franchise, Patrice Desilets, has recently been fired from the company.
Since his departure, Desilets made the following statements regarding the situation:
"Contrary to any statements made earlier today, this morning I was terminated by Ubisoft," Desilets began.
"I was notified of this termination in person, handed a termination notice and was unceremoniously escorted out of the building by two guards without being able to say goodbye to my team or collect my personal belongings.
This was not my decision. Ubisoft's actions are baseless and without merit. I intend to fight Ubisoft vigorously for my rights, for my team and for my game."
The news was first announced by an Ubisoft spokesperson who detailed the reason that Desilets was let go:
"The acquisition of THQ Montréal in January allowed Ubisoft to welcome 170 experienced developers, including Patrice Désilets, to our existing and renowned workforce.
Unfortunately, since the acquisition, the good faith discussions between Patrice and Ubisoft aimed at aligning Patrice’s and the studio’s visions have been inconclusive.
As a result, Patrice has left the studio. Our priorities remain with the teams already hard at work on projects in development. They are at the root of Ubisoft Montréal’s past and future successes."
This marks the second time Desilets has departed from Ubisoft; back in 2010 he left the company after finishing his work on an Assassin's Creed release to work with THQ Montreal. THQ Montreal was then acquired by Ubisoft in January, bringing Desilets back to the company.
Back before THQ was dissolved, Desilets was apparently working on a game with the codename "1666". Next to nothing is known about the game itself other than THQ registered domains and trademarked the name before the company went kaput.
Desilets hasn't revealed what steps he'll be taking next in regards to his "unceremonious" termination by Ubisoft, and has yet to reveal where he'll be working next. It will be interesting if Ubisoft delivers more information as to why Desilets was let go–especially in response to the creator's recent claims that the company handled the situation badly.
Only time will tell whether or not the mysterious 1666 title will in fact see the light of day, but without Desilets, Ubisoft may in fact cancel the project altogether.
It's quite odd to see Ubisoft handle the creator of one of the most profitable and prestigious franchises in their label with such disdain, however we may receive more clarification when (and if) they speak out about the situation.
