The Daily VR-Zone News Summary – 7 June 2011

In today's news roundup:

  • ARM is claiming that it is in a position to seize up to 40% of the notebook market by 2015, a goal which it attributes solely  to Microsoft's decision to open its Windows operating system to the ARM architecture;
  • Word has it that Sony and Toshiba are planning to enter into a partnership to jointly establish an OLED fab in Higashiura, Japan;
  • Sony's elusive S1 and S2 tablets have reportedly been cleared by the FCC recently, and that it is only a matter of time before both tablets eventually start making their way onto retail shelves;
  • Skype's woes continue to worsen yet again, with the popular internet telephony application having been hit with yet another service outage, less than two weeks after the company faced similar problems;
  • Nintendo's successor for the Wii console, which has been officially dubbed the Wii U, was unveiled at E3 not too long ago, and
  • BioWare has released yet another cinematic trailer for Star Wars: The Old Republic

ARM to own 40% share in 2015 notebook market with help from Windows 8, says ARM president
Description: ARM CEO Tudor Brown, during an exclusive interview with Digitimes, pointed out that he estimates that ARM will be able to take a 40% share of the global notebook market in 2015, helping the company to compete against CPU giant Intel.

Sony and Toshiba to establish a joint OLED fab?
Description: There's an interesting report that Sony and Toshiba plan to join forces in a new display unit, aiming for small/medium displays (for mobile phones and tablets). According to the report, the new unit will establish an OLED fab in Higashiura, Japan.

Cooler Master Storm Enforcer Mid-Tower Gaming Case Review @Hi Tech Legion
Description: The latest enclosure in the Cooler Master Storm line is the Enforcer Mid-Tower Gaming Case. With a unique beveled nose, well placed side window, reinforced front door and red LED lighting, the Storm Enforcer looks every inch a gaming case. But gaming requirements go beyond looks, and the Storm Enforcer doesn’t stop there. The Enforcer has a rotatable and removable HDD cage capable of holding six 3.5” drives, as well as a removable cage for two 2.5” drives for SSD users. The removable cage allows for 390mm VGA card clearance with the top cage removed, easily enough for any of today’s cards. Asus Launches new AMD 9 Motherboards
Description: Motherboard maker Asus has released a range of AM3+ based motherboards which it claims will give AMD users more features than they have ever had or wanted every before. The AMD 9s support the 990FX/990X/970 chipsets and AM3+ CPUs. Asus claims that it is the first company to market fully compatible AM3+ motherboards. Models include the M5A99/97 Series, the TUF Sabertooth 990FX and the ROG Crosshair V Formula.

Bing Voice Search Coming To Xbox
Description: Later this year, Bing search will take on a new platform: the Xbox entertainment/gaming console. And to prove that it’s all cutting edge stuff in the gamers’ world, Bing will be offering a voice-based search engine (in addition to a traditional text/type-based search) to help users find games, movies and TV shows, music and other content that’s available via the Xbox.

Sony S1 Honeycomb tablet slips through the FCC with AT&T frequencies and HSPA+ broadband module
Description: Ah Sony, your S1 and S2 tablet secrets are safe with trusty ol' Engadget. Take these new SGPT113JP/S and SGPT114JP/S tablets that just passed through the FCC. We won't tell anyone that they're actually variants of your S1 tablet, that 9.4-inch jobbie with Android 3.x Honeycomb and custom-made "Quick and Smooth" UI and "Swift" web browser. And mum's the word on the 2.4GHz 802.11n WiFi and WCDMA bands II and V radios — the latter making an introduction on AT&T (or perhaps Rogers in Canada) highly likely. And you won't hear us making a peep about the Ericsson F5521gw HSPA+ capable modem that's mentioned, the same module spotted in the S2's FCC filing. Really, we won't say a word until this PlayStation Certified tablet hits retail later in the fall.

Razer’s New Keyboard Is Ready To Battle the Sith Empire
Description: With the new Star Wars: The Old Republic game set for release later this year, Razer's latest gaming keyboard will be nigh essential. Apart from being about to take down the Sith, it looks pretty damn cool. Razer outfitted it with an LCD touch panel for better control and ten adaptive keys you can customize to your skills. Check it out for $199 when the game reaches stores.

Skype hit with yet another service outage
Description: Skype has been hit with yet another service outage, less than two weeks after the company faced similar problems. In a blog post, representative Peter Parkes suggests the issue is limited to "a small number" of users, though the extent of the service interruption initially extended to 22 million users. The company claims to have identified a configuration problem that it is still working to fix late in the morning.

Gaming news

Final Fantasy XIII-2 This December, In Japan
Description: Good news if you are not waiting for the English version of Final Fantasy XIII-2 as the Japanese version will be launching this December. The English version for US and Europe will launch somewhere in Early 2012. Prices are yet to be confirmed. Existing Final Fantasy XIII owners will get a update on the PlayStation 3 which adds “Easy Mode” to the game, a feature that was included in the Xbox copy.

Nintendo’s Answer To Future Gaming – Wii u
Description: Nintendo’s Reggie announces their ‘successor’ to the Wii, the company calls it Wii U. A whole new look to the upcoming platform which is a brand new looking controller itself. It has a 6.2 inch touchscreen with many possibilities.

Star Wars: The Old Republic Intro Cinematic
Description: BioWare made an appearance at yesterday's Electronic Arts E3 2011 press conference, and while the studio provided no new news on its highly anticipated Star Wars MMO, The Old Republic, it did serve up another stunning cinematic trailer for the game. The intro cinematic for the game provides an overview of the galactic space war to come, with snippets from previously released CG trailers and some new sights for Star Wars fans to feast their eyes upon.
