Synology today announced the launch of the DiskStation DS1517+ and DS1817+ NAS servers. Along with the two new tower servers, the company is also launching the Expansion Unit DX517.
The DiskStation DS1517+ is a scalable 5-way tower server while the DiskStation DS1817+ is an 8-bay tower server. Both models are targeted at tech enthusiasts as well as small/medium-sized businesses. They incorporate quite a few “firsts” that set them apart from the other DiskStation products that Synology sells currently.
The DS1517+ and DS1817+ come with a PCIe slot, allowing users to install a 10GbE network interface card or the company’s new M2D17 M.2 SATA SSD adapter. If you choose to install an additional network interface card, you will be able to boost the maximum throughput. Both models are claimed to deliver sequential throughput performance up to 1,179 MB/s read and 542 MB/s write speeds. In case you want higher performance, you can add dual M.2 SATA SSDs, which will let you unlock higher performance and lower latency without occupying the front drive bays. For additional storage, the DS1517+ and DS1817+ both support up to two DX517 expansion units, which means you will be able to add up to 10 additional drive bays.
DS1517+ and DS1817+ run on Synology’s DiskStation Manager (DSM) 6.1 platform that powers the company’s other NAS devices. Both models are expected to go on sale soon, backed by 3-year limited warranties.
