Sony Xperia Z Ultra priced at €680 in Germany, £600 in the UK

Sony’s Xperia Z Ultra fascinated us all with its beastly 6.4-inch Full HD screen, enthralled with the promise of Snapdragon 800 heat and enchanted with a massive 3,000 mAh battery, water and dust protection, as well as pencil and stylus support. But it’s probably time to become pragmatic.

Specifically, try to keep our feet on the ground and decide if Z Ultra’s bang for the buck is the best it could be. Of course, we need concrete pricing details to do that, details that are being unraveled one by one in some of the biggest European countries.

First, we heard the biggest phablet in the world was to be priced at €719 in Netherlands. Shortly after, Sony’s French branch went on record (on Twitter, but still) and confirmed the thing was to cost €729 in the Hexagon.

As for the past 24 hours, these have brought us price tag confirmations for two additional markets – Germany and UK. Ze Germans will be asked to cough up a more affordable €679 by Amazon.de, whereas Clove UK has the Z Ultra up for pre-orders and listed at £599, which is roughly €700 or $915.

Okay, now let’s take a step back. All those price points are different, but they have one thing in common. They revolve around the €700 mark. Which translates into 900 bucks, give or take. Is that a lot? Yes, it is.

Is it too much? That’s a tough one. There’s really no ground of comparison for the Sony Xperia Z Ultra for the time being, since the beast is the largest phone yet and the only one made official with a Snapdragon 800 chip (there’s also the LTE-A Galaxy S4, but that’s likely to remain exclusive to Korea).

Sure, we could pit the Ultra against the original GS4 or HTC’s One and say the pricing is revolting, but again, Sony’s crown jewel is one of a kind. And that has to be worth something, right?
