Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 gets Android 2.3 Gingerbread update

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10

In November last year, Sony Ericsson Xperia have released the Android 2.1 update for its X10, X10 mini and X10 mini pro Android smartphones. Today, the company has announced that the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update will be available for the X10.

Initially, there wasn't any plans to offer Android version higher than 2.1 (Eclair) to the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, according to the company's blog post. However, that decision had been changed and that Android 2.3 Gingerbread will be available for the X10 at the end of Q2 or early Q3.

There are also some of the questions and answers on the blog including what are the components of the upgrade and the differences compared to the current Android 2.1. However, it seems that some of the phone's functionality will be lost or changed due to the upgrade.

– The current plan is that the Xperia X10 will get the Android standard Camera user interface and therefore features like e.g. face recognition, smile shutter etc will be lost.
– Moxier is replaced by the gingerbread native EAS functionality.
– Mediascape is being replaced by the media experience widgets and music player included in our new 2011 products.
– DRM keys for protected content on your phone will be lost in the upgrade process.
– The Sony Ericsson Backup and Restore client is not supported in the Gingerbread version and will therefore be lost.
– Support for bi-directional languages will be reduced compared to the latest version of the 2.1 version of the Xperia X10.

Also, note that the upgrade will only be available through PC-based upgrade clients as it cannot be done over the air. No luck of Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for owners of X10 mini and X10 mini pro though.
