Sony assures us that the PS4 will be “a video game console”

Xbox One Controller

Sony hits back after the Xbox One reveal, saying they are “first and foremost” a gaming console.

A turbulent week for Microsoft is nearly at an end, while some fanboys have calmed down, Sony is ready to talk up their console more as a gaming machine rather than a media hub. Sony President and CEO Kazuo Hirai said the “most important thing” that Sony needs to do right now is to ensure that the next-gen console appeals to gamers. Hirai has come out and said the Playstation 4 will be “first and foremost” a video game console during the D: All Things Digital Conference.

Harai who became CEO on April 1st of last year, has already begun to make big changes at the company, and it looks like his pro-gamer attitude could put Sony on top with the next console generation.  Hirai added that Sony doesn’t want the console to be just a games console, but it’s an “an area we will obviously reveal and talk about in the coming months.”  Harai has been with the company since 1985 and began working on game development back on the original Playstation console. At 52, he is already a veteran in the industry.

While Microsoft has already promised a strong gaming-focused event for E3, Sony has yet to reveal anything about their June presentation or what else they may be showing off. In a recent interview with CNBC, Hirai even hinted at the possibility of services, akin to the Xbox One’s TV integration, coming to the PS4 post-launch. Harai noted that he thinks that with “any PlayStation platform launch — and certainly with PS4 — we want to make sure we have the best and compelling games.” They will also be revealing more “non-game PS4 Functionality” at E3, which could be services such as Netflix, Hulu Plus and SEN additions.

Despite the focus on games, Sony is also influenced by the rise of social and viral gaming, which has definitely caused a rift amongst hardcore and casual gamers. The bigger point is that the developers are already working on games and the controller’s Share button is just a PS4 feature, and may not necessarily effect most players experience.  We’ll definitely find out more when Sony talks at their PlayStation press conference at E3, which will be on June 10th.
