SmartNamo Phablet is an upcoming 6.5-inch spec-buster for India with a $350 price tag

SmartNamo is an Android OEM that practically came out of nowhere a couple of months ago, announcing a fairly intriguing 5-inch smartphone dedicated to a very controversial political figure in India, Narendra Modi, the current Chief Minister of Gujarat (nicknamed the “Iron Man” of modern India).

Only a concept image for now…

Leaving all politics aside, SmartNamo looks like it’s ready to take on the big players of the Android world. At least as far as cold numbers are concerned (i.e. specs). And as far as India is concerned, because we reckon their products have slim chances of becoming popular outside of the country’s borders anytime soon.

The company’s second ever device is set to be called simply the “SmartNamo Phablet” and will go on sale soon for INR 21,111 ($347). That’s not exactly affordable, but chances are you’re going to get what you pay for.

Specifically, the SN Phablet is to sport an enormous, ultra-crisp 6.5-inch Full HD screen, plus 2 GB of RAM, 32 GB of on-board storage, an impressive 13 MP rear camera and very comfortable 3,150 mAh battery.

I know what you’re thinking. If these guys can keep the weight of this monster low and also pack in a quad-core Snapdragon 600 CPU or something equally as zippy, they have a blockbuster on their hands.

Smart Namo

Sadly, that’s not really the case, since a fairly modest MTK6589T processor will power the Phablet that will also tip the scales at a whopping 230 grams. But hey, it does boast a 6.5-inch screen after all, so it’s not like it could have weighed in at 150 grams.

Also, think about the Xperia Z Ultra. That’s only 18 grams lighter and a lot more expensive. True, it’s also far more impressive in terms of raw speed, but does that really warrant the massive price gap? I don’t think so.

But back to the SmartNamo beast for a second and let’s mention the thing is to measure 9.5 mm in thickness, run Android 4.2 out the box and also come with dual SIM support, 2 MP front cam, Wi-Fi, 3G, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and a microSD card slot in tow.

A slightly lower-end model with just 1 gig of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage is in the works as well, but there are no words on pricing for that yet. As there is no news on an official release date, though I have a feeling it’s close. Who wants one?
