SITEX 2008: Your Digital Playground – The Coverage

We bring you coverage of SITEX 2008 (27th – 30th November) held at Singapore Expo. Come on in to find out what’s there at SITEX, including the awesome Canon EOS 5D Mark II DSLR…

Let us start off by visiting Toshiba’s booth, which is located at the corner of Hall 6, at the entrance nearest to the MRT station.

The two most attention-catching laptops are from Toshiba’s flagship Qosmio series.

The Qosmio X300 shown here is equipped with an Intel Core 2 Duo T9400 (2.53GHz) processor, comes with 4GB of DDR3 RAM, and 500GB of storage space in a twin 250GB hard drive configuration.

A GeForce 9700M GTS 512MB chip, which is the fastest in all laptops found locally, takes charge of the graphics department and drives pixels to the 17-inch WSXGA+ screen. An equally powerful sound system in the form of five harmon/kardon speakers (with a woofer) completes the entertainment package.

Don’t expect this to come cheap though. The Qosmio X300 is going for $3999 at the show, but you do get some freebies like a Razer Krait mouse with a Razer Goliathus mouse mat, and a Bagman 17″ backpack.

If you’re looking for something cheaper/smaller but want to retain the goodies the X300 has to offer, try the Qosmio F50. It has the same processor found in the X300, but runs on 4GB DDR2 memory, and a single 400GB hard disk.

The screen is smaller at 15.4″ WXGA and you get NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 512MB graphics chip. It’s not quite as fast as the 9700M GTS, but the 9600M GT is still good for today’s games.

The F50 can be found for $2699.

For the work-orientated user, there are a lot of Satellite and Portege models to choose from, with the latter tipping the scales at less than 2kg. Intel’s latest Montevina platform can be found on these models.

Over at Acer’s booth, the crowd-stopping Predator PC was on display. There are two configurations of the Predator at SITEX.

The first one going for a cool $3999 comes with an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 (2.66GHz, 6MB L2 cache), 4GB DDR2, and a single NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX 512MB.

The second one goes for a near heart-stopping price of $5999, but with that price tag you get an Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 (3GHz, 12MB L2 cache), 4GB DDR2 and dual NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX 512MB in 2-way SLI.

Both systems have a built-in liquid cooling system, which maintais optimal performance even as the action gets hotter.

With the recent netbook craze, Acer is trying hard against the rest of the field by pricing its Aspire one at a price of $688. Or you could get a limited Coral Pink Edition for slightly more at $718.
