Samsung intros ATIV Tab 3, a super-slim 10-inch tablet with Win 8 and a familiar design

Although Samsung (re) introduced the world to the Galaxy S4 Mini, Active and Zoom during yesterday’s Premiere event, the show’s spotlight was primarily on new ATIV family members. The ATIV Q Windows 8/Android hybrid was the center of attention, but the ATIV Tab 3 is not to be ignored either.

Compared with the Q, this fellow has far less aces up its sleeve, being just a “conventional” Windows 8 tablet with a keyboard cover. But its attractiveness lies in Sammy’s execution of the concept, as the ATIV Tab 3 is probably the world’s thinnest Win 8 slate, measuring just 8.2 mm.

The design is certainly striking from a distance, but not necessarily for all the right reasons. If you ignore the tiles and the physical Windows button beneath the screen, you might even mistake this for one of the new Galaxy Tabs, which is both good and bad.

Good, because you can spot a Samsung slate from a mile away now, but bad, because a little originality never hurt anyone. Also, plastic. That’s right, the ATIV Tab 3 is all shiny and sleek, but also plasticky and flimsy.

But by far the biggest flaw is yet to come – the 10.1-inch LCD screen that boasts a 1,366 x 768 pixels resolution. Yikes, that’s a 155 ppi pixel density. Oh, well, at least you get 2 gigs of RAM and a sorta, kinda decent dual-core Intel Atom Z2760 processor (you know, it’s not Haswell, but it could have been worse).

64 GB of internal storage comes standard on the ATIV Tab 3, as does microSD support, NFC and a 5 MP rear camera. There’s also the promise of 4G LTE connectivity, but I presume that will be optional. Finally, in another desperate try to bring some of the Galaxy hotness to the ATIV line, Samsung has equipped the Tab 3 with S Pen support, which is nice I guess, but likely not as useful as on GNotes.

And now, the moment you’ve all been waiting for. The make or break detail of the entire thing – pricing. Drumrolls, please… the ATIV Tab 3 is set to start shipping in early August for $699 with a keyboard cover included. A little steep? Just right? You tell us.
