Samsung announces the Galaxy S4 Active

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active

After months of rumors and leaks, Samsung finally comes clean with their official announcement of the Galaxy S4 Active. Watch out Xperia Z, for the Galaxy S4 Active is here and comes prepared with its own IP67 certification.

It all began with the Sony Xperia Z. Seeing the popular response to the well designed, water and dust proof Xperia Z, Samsung couldn’t just hold it together with their relatively cheap and all-plastic build on the Galaxy S4. Heavily influenced (no doubt) by the IP ratings on the Xperia Z (which Sony expanded with the Xperia ZR), Samsung has finally announced their own alternative to the water-proof phone that people have come to love. Say hello to the new Galaxy S4 Active.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active specifications:

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 Chipset
  • 1.9 GHz Quad Core Krait 300 GPU
  • Adreno 320 GPU
  • 2 GB Of RAM
  • 5-inch 1080p (1920 x 1080) TFT LCD Display
  • 16 GB Internal Storage, Micro SD Card Slot
  • 8 MP Rear Camera, 2 MP Front Camera
  • 2600 mAh Battery
  • Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean

The display being used is a TFT LCD panel and not of Super AMOLED make. Additionally, the camera is downgraded from 13 MP to 8 MP. Samsung doesn’t fail to include that the Galaxy S4 Active’s camera can shoot pictures and videos underwater. A special “Aqua mode” should enhance all those underwater shots for you.

Galaxy S4 vs Galaxy S4 Active

Apart from being a bit taller, thicker and heavier, the Galaxy S4 is largely identical to the Snapdragon 600 i9505 Galaxy S4. The IP67 water and dust resistance allow the phone to survive three feet under water for a full 30 minutes. Impressive, but we’ve already seen this before.

The Galaxy S4 Active will go on sale this summer. It will come in various colors; Urban Grey, Dive Blue and Orange Flare for starters (they really spend a lot of time on their naming, it shows). The initial target markets for this ruggedized version of their best-seller will be the US and Sweden.
