Rumor: Classic Start menu to return with next major Windows 8 update

Microsoft might bring back the classic Start menu to Windows 8 with the next major update to the OS.

Codenamed “Threshold,” the update will add the classic Start menu as an option for those that want it, according to Microsoft expert Paul Thurrott. This will follow the return of the Start button in Windows 8.1, which was the first step Microsoft took to address major complaints with Windows 8, though it did little to stifle all the criticism the company has faced over removing the traditional Start menu and replacing it with a touch-centric version even on desktop computers.

The return of the traditional Start menu will also reportedly be accompanied by the option to use Metro-style applications in floating windows on the desktop. Furthermore, Microsoft is also expected to release Windows Threshold in three different versions (SKUs). The first will be focused on ARM-based Windows tablets, PCs, and Windows Phones and run only Metro-style apps; the other two versions will be more traditional, one focused on consumers, with support for desktop mode and with keyboard/mouse optimization, and another focused on the enterprise market.

Threshold is expected to be released sometime during spring 2015, with the aim of unifying Windows across different platforms, and could possibly be dubbed Windows 8.2.
