Review: Samsung Galaxy Tab Android Tablet

When we received the review unit from Samsung, which comes in a standard retail box, our initial thoughts were that the Android tablet was smaller than we expected. And we were still uncertain about this until we opened the box.

Yes, this is the size of the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Perhaps “7-inch” sounded large, and that once you have seen the Apple iPad you may come up with a wrong judgement of size (maybe it’s just us). Anyway, to be precise, the Galaxy Tab is about 8.5-inch long measured diagonally, while the screen size is 7-inch as claimed. It isn’t very heavy at 380g and you can hold it easily with one hand.

Bundled accessories include the quick start guide, warranty card, power adapter, USB cable and stereo earphones. According to Samsung, other accessories including the dockable keyboard, a desktop dock and TV-out cables are sold separately.

At the base are the built-in speakers and also a unique connector that fits the USB cable for charging and file transfers, as well as optional docks. Below the screen are four touch-sensitive buttons – Menu, Home, Back and Search.

The SIM card and microSD card slots are on the right of the Galaxy Tab, together with the volume controls (which also work as the camera zoom controls) and power/standby buttons. On the opposite side is the built-in microphone.

At the top is the 3.5mm audio jack for you to plug in your earphones and headphones, while just above the display is a front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera for you to make video calls.

Unlike the front exterior that features a black bezel, the rear of the Galaxy Tab is glossy white. A 3-megapixel camera with flash is located at a corner.
