PSU Review – FSP Aurum Gold 700

Despite its high power output the Aurum is surprisingly small, featuring a chassis only 140mm long. FSP definitely tried to make the appearance of their Aurum series power supply unique. The power supply is sprayed with a rough, matte black paint and a golden frame is placed around the hexagonal fan grill. All of the cables are sleeved inside common black nylon sleeves.

The company logo is engraved on the sides of the power supply whereas the sticker with its electrical specifications can be found at the top side of the unit.

The rear is entirely perforated to allow for the air pushed by the cooling fan to escape towards the outside of the case; however FSP did not opt for the typical honeycomb or round holes designs. The openings form a peculiar, arrow like shape. FSP claims that it was done to improve the air flow but we are unsure if that stands true or if it was just another aesthetic modification. A simple on/off switch and a standard 3-DIN A/C power plug can be seen at the rear.

At the front we could only see a few more of these arrow-like holes. This is not a modular power supply, therefore there are no connectors and none of the cables are detachable. This unit offers the following number of connectors:

Native cables

24-pin ATX connector

1 x 4+4 pin 12V CPU connector

4 x 6+2 pin 12V PCIe connectors

7 x SATA connectors

4 x Molex connectors

1 x Floppy connector

The fan behind the hexagonal fan grill is a 120mm fan made by Protechnic Electric, model MGA12012HF-A25. It is a dynamic bearing fan, rated at 2400RPM maximum speed (which is very fast for a fan of this size) and can provide up to 84.8CFM. At maximum speed this fan is rated at 37dBA (unrestricted, laboratory conditions).
