PlayStation 4 outsells Xbox One by 1.2 million units

By garnering sales of 4.2 million units worldwide, Sony’s PlayStation 4 has the clear edge over the Xbox One, which sold 3 million units.

Sony managed to sell 4.2 million units of the PlayStation to consumers by December 28, 2013.

The manufacturer disclosed the numbers at its event at the Consumer Electronics Show. Meanwhile, Microsoft announced earlier this week that it sold 3 million units of the Xbox One until now. Both consoles were launched within a week of one another in the month of November, with the PS4 narrowly edging out the Xbox One by 2.1 million to 2 million units.

While Microsoft did manage to build steam initially, selling well over a hundred thousand Xbox One consoles every day, it was not able to continue the momentum. Another factor that affected the Xbox One sales is its availability. The PS4 is offered in 53 countries as of now, with the Xbox One selling in only 13 markets. Microsoft mentioned that a roadblock in launching the Xbox One in other countries comes with configuring regional language settings for Kinect, along with adding local entertainment services.

However, the fact that the PS4 costs a $100 less than the Xbox One could also be a major reason for its strong sales. In addition to the 4.2 million console sales, Sony mentioned that it had sold 9.7 million games both digitally and at retail locations. Games like Call of Duty: Ghosts, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, and Battlefield 4 were some of the best-selling games on the console.

Sony mentioned during the launch of the PS4 that it intends to sell 5 million units by March 2014. That target is well within its sights now.
