Oculus Rift announces features for those wearing glasses and contacts

While gamers have had to deal with a three month delay on the release of the Oculus Rift virtual reality developers kit, the team has just announced some new features integrated during the delay – namely, the integration of new "eyecups" for those who are nearsighted, farsighted, and who may use glasses or contacts.

These kits slid back on their schedule, now slated for release in March – a three month delay from the original release date. The team hasn't been sitting on their laurels as they've announced that they've used this delay time to create new swappable lens for the Rift, all to accommodate those who are vision-impaired.

“Our early prototypes required that you either: 1. Wear contact lenses. 2. Press your glasses up against the lenses, which can cause scratches (it’s also uncomfortable). 3. Squint!” said Palmer, creator of the Oculus Rift, in the most recent blog post. “After prototyping a number of potential solutions, we picked what we thought was the best short-term bet and ran with it.”


The solution is rather technical, but overall brilliant – varying lens, designed to accommodate specific varieties of focal distance. There are three “removable eyecups”: the normal version, the farsighted version, and the nearsighted version. “This isn’t the perfect solution: the B and C cups won’t be ideal for everyone, but we’re hoping that they help some of the nearsighted developers,” said Palmer. “If you have other eye issues like astigmatism, the additional lens cups may not be sufficient. In short, your mileage may vary.”

In addition to the eyecups, the team has integrated adjustable assembly to accommodate glasses (if required), or a “larger brow” – overall, the headset should be more universally comfortable.

With the addition of these features, the Oculus Rift will still be sticking to its March dev kits release. They're still taking orders for the kits: $300 even. If you're interested in a developer kit now rather than waiting for a commercial version, now is the time to grab one.
